 Carlo Pittore (Charles Stanley) 1943-2005

Carlo Pittore (Charles Stanley) was a dedicated,  well-known, figurative artist who lived much of his life, painted, taught, and died in Bowdoinham, Maine. He was an inspiring teacher and a mentor to many younger artists. His circle of devoted friends was wide and his body of artwork extensive. He was a passionate advocate for classical, figurative art and a tireless activist for the role and importance of art and artists in a civil society. A fitting recognition of his stature and many contributions to the art scene in Maine came with the awarding of an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts by the Maine College of Art, in Portland, Maine, in May of 2005. Carlo Pittore died two months later on July 17. Carlo’s curriculum vitae presents a complete listing of his numerous achievements and international recognition: national and international solo shows; group exhibitions; documentations; critical reviews; and presence of his artwork in major collections.

The Carlo Pittore Foundation for the Figurative Arts

The Carlo Pittore Foundation for the Figurative Arts, a non-profit, tax-exempt, private [501(c) (3)] foundation was established to promote and educate the public about Carlo’s art and provide support to figurative artists and the figurative art he so passionately championed. Mr. Pittore’s death has provided the Foundation, to which he bequeathed all his unsold artwork, publications, and financial assets, with resources to begin to carry out its purposes. The artwork that the Foundation owns is considerable, almost one thousand oil paintings, several thousand drawings on paper, watercolors, and many examples of Mail Art, a genre Carlo was instrumental in establishing and spreading worldwide. In addition to the artwork, the Foundation also received Carlo Pittore’s extensive library of art books, which it subsequently donated to the Maine College of Art; numerous journals; and a voluminous correspondence, much of it with well-established artists and members of the art world, that is of biographical and historical interest. These materials are currently safely stored in Brunswick, Maine.

The Carlo Pittore Foundation is in its formative stage. The Board of Directors, in collaboration with the Advisory Trustees and other knowledgeable individuals and institutions, will be working to establish a strategy for securing administrative support and management assistance, adopting policies and procedures for the Foundation’s programs, and creating and maintaining an Internet Web site and other documentation about the Foundation, Carlo Pittore, and the Foundation’s programs.

The first major activity of the Foundation has been to ensure that the entirety of the artwork and writings  be transferred from his residence/studio (Bowdoinham) to appropriate, safe storage (Brunswick) where it can be both conserved and made available, under supervision, to students, art historians, curators, and potential exhibitors. The Foundation’s second activity will be to thoroughly catalogue and photograph this vast collection, which will permit the Foundation to actively seek venues for its public exhibition and consider sale of selected examples in order to ensure exhibition and to fund other forms of support for figurative art and artists. Biographical documentation of Carlo’s life and achievements will also be carried out to complement the cataloguing of his work. Sorting and cataloguing of Carlo’s extensive correspondence with other artists and friends, in which he expresses his artistic ideals, will also be undertaken. This material will be available for reference, publication, or donation to appropriate educational institutions. Cataloguing the artwork, sorting and assessing the correspondence is expected to comprise the bulk of the Foundation’s efforts in the near future.

The details of the Foundation's specific programs remain to be established. The Foundation anticipates being in a position to actively promote Carlo Pittore’s artwork, raise funds through the sale of his artwork, and begin supporting figurative art and artists in 2008.
